We brought our bikes and rode the trail upstream and upgrade with fly rods only. But first we started in Taylor’s Valley, because we had seen fish there too. That morning we saw them again, and one looked to be about a foot and a half.

“Dad, look at that one. He’s huge!”

“He’s a lunker,” I admit.

I worked upstream of the bridge, and Sam tried a copper nymph from the bridge itself. I expected few results before we got to 33, but he hooked one and shouted with ecstasy. His rod horseshoed, bent in half, and he reeled furiously. “I got one! I got one!” But he pulled too hard. When the fish came out of the water—its presence made sparkling and clear—it spit out the hook.

“That’s a half,” he said, disheartened, after the practice we have of counting fish we almost land.

“It was a nice one,” I say, trying to be encouraging and hoping the mood won’t be spoiled for the trip upstream.
